Peebles Bergin
Schulte & Robinson LLP announces a historic victory for our longtime client,
Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians. On January 10, 2025, the U.S. Department of
the Interior issued a decision that it will take 160 acres of land in Vallejo,
California, into trust for the Tribe as its homeland. This landmark decision
comes 34 years after the Tribe was restored to federal recognition in 1991 and
marks a pivotal moment in their ongoing journey to reclaim their homeland.
Partner Patrick
R. Bergin has represented the Tribe throughout the entire process, which began
in 2015. "Representing the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians on this journey
has been one of the greatest honors of my career," said Bergin. "This
decision is a testament to the Tribe's unyielding resilience, forward-thinking
vision, and steadfast commitment to building a brighter future for their people
and generations to come."
The newly
restored land in Vallejo, California, represents a significant step toward the
Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians' self-determination. It will serve as the
foundation for transformative developments that reflect the Tribe's vision for
its future, including 24 tribal homes, a tribal administration building, and a
casino facility.
"This is a
monumental step forward in the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians' pursuit of
self-determination and economic independence," added Bergin.
Peebles Bergin Schulte & Robinson LLP extends its congratulations to the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians and looks forward to continuing its advocacy on behalf of the Tribe. You can read the full decision here.
